ooc: My first post ;D Sorry if its crap.
It was noon. Fierce, intense beams of sunlight scorched the already burning land. Herds of different species of deer were grazing, they looked relaxed but actually they were on the verge of bolting as always, their muscles tensed, permanently waiting for some unexpected attack. An Elephant trumpeted in the distance, but it was a muffled sound; another effect of the heat. The horizon seemed to quiver and melt whereas the trees were so blurred they could have been mistaken for anything, a pool of clear, fresh, satisfying water maybe...or even a jeep full of welcoming tourists, beckoning from the shade...
Nina suddenly found herself flat on her back staring up at the cloudless sky, the sun painfully bright. I must have passed out she concluded to herself. Getting to her feet was almost as painful as the rays of sun beating down on her sizzling skin. She scanned the horizon. Nothing. Nothing but the same stupid deer and the occasional twisted tree; if they could even be called trees. Her original plan was to follow the direction of the sun--it was her only guidance in this goddamn place.
Nina was exhausted. She had been traveling for days now having arrived in Echo cheerful and confident but now all her supplies had run out, she had had to ditch them, her strength diminishing. All she had with her now was a crude Bow with a few sharpened stick made out of the dry wood she had found a while back. Her clothes, torn and grimy with sweat, consisted of a not-so-white anymore tank top and some rolled up beige cut offs that were just as ripped and disgusting as her top. Nina's bare feet bled freely, leaving a trail of red prints behind her, she was surprised some hungry predator hadn't come to harass her yet.
She ran her hands through her tangled blond hair and groaned, her throat protested feebly, the sound grating on her parched tongue. Suddenly a flash of silver in the distance caught her dozy eyes. Was it the sun playing more tricks with her eyes or was that the glint of sunlight reflecting off the surface of...water? Immediately she was running. All her last resources of energy being used up in this last effort to survive, her long legs pumped faster and faster as adrenaline coursed through her veins with abandon; her hair flying out behind her.
"YES! THANKGOD!" she shouted with relief as she ran. The shape of a small pooling of water was becoming clearer with every step she took until finally she was there. Animals gathered at its edge to drink, the Zebras braying loudly as the majestic Elephants parted the crowd to bath in the mud. Nina's eyes were wide with awe, all these creatures living in harmony and sharing the only source of water for miles around. The thought suddenly made the blond girl feel very small and indifferent, sometimes she wished she was an animal herself. Strong, brave and intelligent in their own survival. Nina sighed, overwhelmed.
Shaking her head she prepared to push past the animals in front of her to get to the life giving liquid. As she stepped forward, it occurred to her how stupid she was being. What person in their right mind would expect a whole troupe of elephants and deer to let a single, puny human drink from their watering hole? She almost laughed out loud and proceeded to settle herself down a good few meters away on top of a large boulder.
She found herself dozing once more as she watched a Pride of magnificent, powerful lions loping to wards the watering hole, their muscles rippling under their smooth golden pelts. The lead male roared their arrival and crouched to drink, lapping at the water with purposeful strokes and his eyes forever watching the animals around him. His pride gathered around him and waited for him to finish before drinking themselves, first the lionesses and then three furry cubs came tumbling down to the edge of the watering hole; the sight brought a warm smile to Nina's face. The image of the lions stayed in her mind as her dozing turned to a real exhausted sleep...
Noon became evening, and from evening to night and still the girl slept alone, curled up on boulder, her arms stretched to wards the now empty wateringhole...Nina was so naive in this boiling land, snow was all she was used to and the predators that came with the snow as well. What she didn't know was that most predators in the Savannah...hunted at Night...
