Hiking, in my book, is fun and interesting. A bit of vegetation in the way made it a challenge, but it was bearable. However, hacking your way through a forest with no trail, in the middle of a rather hot and humid day, is not entertaining. I was making very little progress as I pushed away branches and hurdled logs, and swatted at various insects that decided to make my day worse than it already was. So how did I get here you ask? Well lets recap...
-Flashback-
The morning was hot, as I awoke. The night before had been cold, so I was sleeping in my hoodie. I woke up drenched in sweat, and rolled over to ask Jared what time it was. 'That's odd,' I thought, 'where's Jared?' Then I realized exactly what a predicament I was in.
The night before, I had curled up on my camp cot, now I was laying on the not so soft ground. The night before, I had crawled into the tent and said goodnight to Jared. Now there was no tent, and no Jared. The day before, Jared and I had set off on another camping trip with oodles of supplies. Now I realized all I had was my backpack and whatever was inside. As well as the clothes on my body.
I rushed over to my backpack to see what exactly, was inside it. I rummaged around, and found that all my clothes were there, my knife, and my water bottle. The only provisions I had were a few candy bars, a pack of peanuts, and some granola bars. Emergency supplies consisted of a few band-aids, one cloth bandage, and some wound disinfectant. The only other thing in the backpack was three needles and several spools of durable thread. Jared and I constantly found small tears in out tents because we used them so much. Having the ability to do a patch-job helped.
I reorganized and closed the backpack. I also stowed my hoodie in there because it was so hot. I stood up to get my bearings, only to knock my head into a low hanging branch. I realized that the canopy above was so thick that I couldn't see the sun. The vegetation of this place was the same as our campsite. But here and there were some rarer trees as well. Something about the aura of this place was oddly comforting, but I still wanted to know where I was.
So how in the world did I get here. Waking up in an entirely different place than where you fell asleep only happened in sci-fi and fantasy movies. Was I dreaming? Nope. The bugs were too real.
-End Flashback-
In the end I had decided to try and get out of this place. This forest had to come to an end, it couldn't go on forever, could it? Maybe this was a dream. "No," I said aloud, "A dream is a wish your heart makes, now this....this is a nightmare."
